Even in the darkest of punishment prophecies given to Israel and Judah, God always promised hope. A future and a remnant would be rescued despite captivity. Evil nations who harmed God's people would be punished. God's kingdom, as insignificant and wounded as it seemed, would be established in a truer, greater way.

Living back in their promised land, however, the Jews know this isn't "all there is." They looked ahead for the promised One, who would establish God's kingdom in a much greater way than a patched-together temple and Judean remnant. The Jewish nation waited, through persecution and with no new prophetic word, holding onto only the former Words given by the prophets. In the "intertestamental period" or the "years of silence," God's people were called to simply do what was right and wait for the coming King -- similar to the way we are living now in 2024 as we wait for His return and cling to His Word.
